Got to the confluence around 10:00 to 1030 and were on the river pretty quickly. The North Fork was generating and we fished on it for roughly an hour in the area of the handicap ramp and up river another half mile or so. We managed to catch 6-7 and I managed to loose 4 new lures through hang-ups and breaking my 6 pounds test line within the first 30 minutes of fishing! Pretty frustrating and the fish were smaller than usual for the North Fork. Generation stopped around 11:00 and we headed back down the river with me missing one pretty good brown trout that quickly jumped twice and threw the lure.
The rest of the day was on the White fishing down river from the confluence. It was no generation and low-water but we were able to navigate without much difficulty. Confidence corner resulted in a few fish but really not much action. We continued on down the river to the pavilion area and from there down to Steamboat Springs was the balance of the day. Tim was the hot fisherman today using a golden and red Boulant spoon and caught fish regularly. Most were in the small to medium-size with all being rainbow. Fishing was reasonably regular and we managed to catch 48 by the end of the day. We did on the way up run into low water and grounding the boat briefly in the area below confidence corner towards the middle of the river.... that was surprising and we need to remember for future low water fishing.
Overall, nice winter day with only one other boat even seen on the river! Temperature in the low to mid-50's, with some cool wind off and on. Better day number-wise than other recent trips.
